Me and my Mustang Pony, 1965
A Mustang is a unique little American made Motorbike/Cycle/Scooter. In 1965 me and my "Mustang buddies" would never call a Mustang a Scooter or a Motorbike. A Scooter was a Cushman. A Motorbike was a Honda 90. A Motorcycle was a Harley. You could call a Mustang a Motorcycle and we wouldn't be offended, but since deep down we knew it really wasn't a motorcycle, we simply called it a "Motor".
Mustang Motor Products Corporation in southern California started making Mustangs in the late 40's. They went out of business in the mid 60's. I've been told that they produced approximately 20,000 Mustangs while they were in business. They produced 4 models, the Pony, Bronco, Stallion, and Thoroughbred. To me, the Stallion was the ultimate. It had about 12 1/2 hp, 4 speed transmission, spoke wheels, and an exposed chrome flywheel. The pony (pictured above) had 9 1/2 hp, 3 speed transmission and solid steel wheels.
Recently I found "The Mustang Motorcycle Club of America", and promptly joined. The club is an organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of Mustang motorcycles. To my surprise, there are a bunch of people out there that love the mighty little Mustang as much and more than me.
